Dog Activity Classes
Activity classes focus on getting the dog to enjoy the time he spends "training", and is just as much about giving the owners the right information and tools to work with, as it is about giving the dogs a grounding. The dgs are given exercises which are fun, and that are related to everyday life. They are about building a better bond between dog, and owner. The classes are run in 5 week blocks, and each class is related to the previous one. Each week is a slightly different theme, and each dog is encouraged to do what he is best at, and this of course varies from dog to dog. The classes are not traditional obedience classes, and the dogs are allowed to develop and learn at their own pace, and so too are the owners! There are different types of class to suit all types of dogs, these are as follows; puppy classes, adult dog classes and also Greyhound and Lurcher classes. I also run specialised short workshops (often over 2 consecutive weeks) for all types of dog, which include recall clinics, pulling on lead short courses and socialising your dog classes. The short courses combine theory and practical work with your dog. The classes have no more than 5 dogs in each, and the emphasis is on teaching both the dogs and the owners. Puppy classesThese classes are designed to help puppies grow up into confident adult dogs, who have good canine communication, and social skills. The classes also exist to help owners to deal with any problems that arise as puppies become adolescents. All the classes include handouts throughout the course which build up into a manual which can be referred back to throughout the dogs life. Puppies must be fully vaccinated before starting classes, and the age limit is 20 weeks. Adult dog activity classesThese classes involve the use of positive training methods, and no aversives are reccomended or used. Training exercises include the use of activities and mental stimulation. There are no "drilling exercises" as there often are in traditional training classes, and the main aim is for the dogs to have fun and learn at the same time. Greyhound and Lurcher classesI have devised these classes because not only do I own both Greyhounds and Lurchers, but because on my travels I have heard of many training classes who refuse to teach these dogs, leaving owners of these dogs often feeling like second class citizens. Many Greyhounds are also ex racing Greyhounds, and are not always socialised to other types of dog. This can lead to a lack of owner confidence in dealing with a dog who has not had the same life experience and upbringing as most other dogs. These dogs are very bright and easy to teach but often find small halls and slippery floors difficult, which means they can become very distracted. This may look a little like they are stubborn or "stupid", but this is definitely not the case! They just need some nurturing when they are first re homed, and are just as intelligent, if not more so than other dogs. They also seem to feel more comfortable in the company of dogs of their own kind.....but this does not mean they cannot be mixed with other types of dogs. These classes will help to instill confidence and skills for both the dog and owner. Behaviour ProblemsI am also on hand throughout the courses if your dog has a behaviour problem you would like to discuss, as it is part of the package when you sign up for any of the classes.
