PRE-BOOKING INFORMATION FOR CANINE BOWEN

How to book and prices

If you have any questions, or would like to discuss your dog’s needs or problems before booking an appointment, you are welcome to contact me by either email or phone.

Before the first session of CBT your vet’s permission needs to be obtained. I can either email or send you a referral form. Your vet needs to complete and sign the form before any appointments can be confirmed. I will provide you with a SAE for you to return the form to me.

Alternatively I am happy to contact your vet on your behalf and obtain the necessary permission, please contact me and let me know your vets details.

The following points should be considered before deciding on a day or time for your dog to receive Bowen therapy. It is preferable that your dog is as relaxed as possible, as he will respond better when relaxed.

  • Avoid busy times of the day such as your dog’s tea time, or especially busy times in your house.
  • Try to walk your dog before he has Bowen, preferably a walk which has not exhausted him.
  • If he is experiencing anxiety problems, it is better to choose a day when he has not been stressed and when you are able to remain with him, or nearby for the rest of the day.
  • It is important that your dog is allowed to rest after a session, so avoid long walks, training classes or agility after the Bowen session. If your dog needs daily grooming do this before he receives Bowen rather than after.
  • If your dog is having an operation and you would like him/her to receive Bowen before this time as a help towards quicker recovery, you will need to arrange a session for 4-5 days before the operation.
  • You are also advised to shorten any walks for 7 days after a Bowen session; otherwise re-injury is likely to occur. This is especially important if your dog seems “re invigorated”- if he dashes about he is likely to overdo it!

How many sessions will my dog need?

It is recommended that your dog receives 2 or 3 Canine Bowen sessions initially, and ideally these will be about a week to 10 days apart. Many dogs respond after 2 sessions so it is important to observe your dog and watch for any changes. Some dogs may then need “top ups” which can vary from once a month to once a year.

Each session lasts about 45 minutes, this may be longer during the first session, as it will be necessary to observe your dog, take some details of his lifestyle, and allow him to relax as there will be a strange person in his/her home.

During the session your dog will feel more settled and secure if you are present, but it is preferable to remain still and quiet and try to refrain from stroking your dog until after the session is finished and he has rested.

Bowen can continue to have an effect for up to 7-10 days after being received, so you will be encouraged to observe your dog, and note down any changes in his behaviour or habits.
