BOWEN THERAPY FOR HUMANS, HORSES AND HOUNDS

What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Technique or Bowen Therapy is a gentle non invasive and relaxing hands on therapy that was devised in Australia by Tom Bowen.

It is a very versatile therapy which can be effective not just for humans, but also for horses and dogs. It treats the whole body, and not named conditions. Some therapies concentrate only on areas of the body where pain is being experienced, but Bowen therapists work on the entire body.

To explain this in a little more detail, if pain is being experienced in the lower back, treatment will take in the whole body, because as soon as we experience pain we begin to compensate by moving differently in order to defend and relieve the painful area. This often leads to tension and stiffness in other areas of the body. Therefore treatment of the whole body is indicated not just isolated areas.

Riders can experience pain due to the strains and stresses put on the body. Not to mention the amount of physical work that goes with looking after horses.

horse and rider

Pain and tension is not exclusive to people, horses have to carry riders whether they are feeling comfortable or not, and dogs very often cover pain up by exhibiting strange behaviours, which are not necessarily nice to live with......how often do you get a bit down, and grumpy when you are in pain?

Will a treatment hurt?

No! Bowen works over soft tissue and muscle, and no bone crunching is involved. You will experience no pain because Bowen uses light pressure, and rolling movements over soft tissue, on specific areas of the body, and does not concentrate on the centre of any pain present. No oils or creams are used and the treatment can be performed through light clothing, so no embarrassing removal of clothes is needed.

The moves used first seek to address areas of the body that hold tension ie the lower back, and upper back just below the shoulders. Once tension is addressed it can help provide relief and relaxation from the very beginning of the treatment.

Is it just useful for pain?

No, Bowen can also have a positive effect on emotional, hormonal and seasonal afflictions such as hayfever, period pain, stress and can help to boost energy. It has provided help and relief for a great variety of human conditions such as;

  • Hayfever and allergies
  • Insomnia and sleep problems
  • Low energy
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress and anxiety problems
  • Back, leg and shoulder pain
  • Joint problems
  • Sports injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Support for both pre and post operation
  • Hormonal problems including period pain, and PMT
